To create your own Kentia palm potting mix, here’s my tried and tested home recipe:
- two parts sand
- two parts peat moss
- one part perlite
- one part aged compost

You can now find many different pre-blended potting soils, and some work great for Kentia palms. If you want to avoid making your own potting mix, consider purchasing a well-draining mix specifically designed for palm trees.

Why Choosing the Right Soil Is Important
While outdoor plants grow in the native soil, potted plants must grow in whatever soil we provide. Choosing the wrong potting mix for your plants can lead to disease, water and nutrient uptake issues, and even plant death.
Since plants have different water, nutrition, aeration, and support needs, not all plants will grow well in one soil type. Your goal as a grower is to choose a potting mix that provides your plant with everything it needs to grow and thrive.
When choosing a soil, ask if it provides plants with all of the following functions.
- Water: soil will hold water so plants can survive periods between rainfall or irrigation events
- Aeration: soil should provide small air pockets where gas exchange can occur
- Structural support: soil provides a place for plant roots to grow and anchor; plants cannot support themselves without soil
- Nutrients: soil may provide nutrients and also hold onto nutrients until plants are ready to take them up
- Insulation: soil helps buffer plants against changes in air temperature

What Are the Primary Components of a Potting Mix?
Potting mixes can contain many different components, including the following popular materials.
Sand: sand is an inorganic material with particles ranging from 0.05 to 2.0 mm; it improves drainage and aeration
Peat moss: an organic material made from decomposed material found in bogs; it helps hold water and nutrients while also providing aeration
Coco coir: coco coir is an alternative to peat moss with similar properties
Compost: compost is decomposed organic material that may be rich in nutrients and/or beneficial microorganisms; it helps improve both drainage and water-holding and holds nutrients
Pine bark fines: small bits of pine bark that improve aeration and drainage
Perlite: an expanded volcanic rock that helps improve drainage and aeration
Vermiculite: another type of expanded rock; that improves drainage, aeration, and water-holding
Pebbles: small rocks that drastically improve drainage
Why Is Well-Draining Soil Important?
Kentia palms grow best in soil that remains slightly moist but not wet. If you use a soil mix that’s high in organic matter or clay, it may not offer enough drainage.
If your plant sits in wet soil, it may develop root rot. This fungal disease can prohibit roots from taking up water and nutrients, leading to wilted, limp, and/or discolored leaves. If left untreated, root rot can cause plant death.
What Soil pH is Best?
Kentia palms prefer slightly acidic or neutral soil, with a pH between 5.5 and 7.0. However, these plants may grow okay in slightly alkaline soil.
Common Signs You’re Using the Wrong Soil Mix
Using the wrong soil mix can lead to various problems with Kentia palms.
If you’re using soil that lacks proper drainage, the soil will remain wet between waterings. That means your plant may develop yellow fronds, a fungal disease known as root rot, or limp fronds. Fronds may eventually fall from the plant.
A soil that provides too much drainage can lead to dry soil. This may result in fronds with brown tips, wilted plants, or fronds that turn yellow due to issues with nutrient uptake.
Providing too much or too little water can also lead to similar symptoms, so you’ll need to investigate both your soil and kentia palm watering schedule to determine the cause of your plant’s problems.
