Audience Member The money truly can be the pits. A young Tom Hanks and Shelley Long are Walter and Anna. They are married and just bought a house after house-sitting the apartment from her ex-husband when he kicks them out. They land a country estate for an exceptionally low price. But the price they pay is more than financial as the whole house starts to fall apart bit by bit. The stairs, the bathtub, the kitchen, the gas, the electric all go haywire. A lot of this actually reminded me of Funny Farm with Chevy Chase. Same kind of scenario with a couple facing all kinds of troubles at their new home. Yet this experience may test the limits of their relationship. Hanks and Long are a likable couple. Much of the physical humor works with Hanks getting to react to all the mishaps at this estate. No classic by any means but it's a realistic situation any married couple can face when buying a new home. Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/26/24 Full Review Jeff M Yet another example of what's funny when you're 12 is not necessarily funny when you're 47. The film itself feels like harmless fluff watching it now - and is really only interesting as a footnote in the early career of Hanks. While watching this, I realized that Hanks never really did much physical comedy once the 80s were over, and he alone makes this film worth watching as he adeptly handles a number of spills and pratfalls. Unfortunately, he and Long aren't exactly a comedy dream team. Long has always been a hit or miss comic actress with me, and here she comes across shrill rather than funny. Her scenes without Hanks stop the movie dead in its tracks - it doesn't help that Godunov as her ex-husband doesn't appear to have a funny bone in his entire body. A couple supporting performances provide a chuckle or two, and for the most part it's basically family friendly during its quick 90 minute run. One has grown accustomed to expect more from a Hanks movie nowadays, but it will keep the kids occupied and you might look up from your book a time or two. So a 4 from me and a 5 from my wife, split the difference and 4.5 :) Rated 4.5/5 Stars • Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/01/24 Full Review Thomas K One of my favorite comedies of all times. Tom Hanks is really, really funny and great. Rated 4.5/5 Stars • Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/16/24 Full Review Tania G My husband laughed through the whole thing. Me, meh.
